The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) has sentenced the 22-year-old Kazakh Sergey Shatovkin to a four-year suspension for possession of a prohibited substance. The cyclist ordered the substance in Russia and had it delivered to his home in Switzerland. The Federal Customs Administration seized the package and immediately notified Antidoping Switzerland, where it was found to be linked to the active cyclist. Antidoping Switzerland then coordinated the next steps with the Cycling Anti-Doping Foundation (CADF) and UCI. The athlete was suspended by UCI a little over a week later. The case highlights the importance of effective cooperation between state authorities, national anti-doping organizations, and international sporting federations, to protect clean athletes.
